[Brownbag] Brown Bag November 19: Omer Gersten

Please join us for the Demography Brown Bag Presentation on Wednesday, 
November 19. Omer Gersten (Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica, 
Taiwan) will present, "Stressors over the life course and physiological 
dysregulation in Costa Rica." An abstract is below and the paper is 
attached.

Abstract: Using a nationally representative survey conducted in Costa
Rica, this study investigates whether stressors experienced over the life
course are associated with measures of poor health. Stressors analyzed
include indicators of low SES (e.g., low income), social deprivation
(e.g., living alone), loss (e.g., death of a child), and early childhood
adversity (e.g., growing up without the presence of a biological father).
The measures of health analyzed here are four biomarkers that are involved
in the stress response and are thought to measure function of the
neuroendocrine system.

The main finding of this work is that there is practically no connection
between the stressors and the biomarkers. Although this negative finding
has been corroborated by other studies, more research using a wider
variety of measurements of the biomarkers and of a stressful life history
is still needed. Notes: Will Dow (UC Berkeley) and Luis Rosero-Bixby
(University of Costa Rica) are co-authors on the study. A PDF of the paper
